Adventure Day One

May 3, 2008- Close your eyes, relax and drift back in time to when you were small – a child full of wonder.  Think about a smell that you remember - a smell so strong you can describe the event around that memory – cookies baking at the holidays, fresh cut grass in the summer time, or fall leaves on a crisp autumn day – I bet you are smiling.

 

What is the memory you are having?  What picture is being painted in your mind’s eye?  Memories are the snapshots our emotions take while we are on this adventure called life. 

 

For me one smell that evokes a sweet memory is from fresh cut lilacs in the spring time.  When I was a child in elementary school we took turns bringing flowers to class.  I was full of anticipation to have my name called.  I would run home to gleefully share the news with my mother that I had the honor of taking in the flowers.  Early the next morning I would cut the biggest lilacs from the bush in the back yard to carry to class.  It is a tradition in our family to split the lilac bushes each time we move from house to house and plant them in the new residence – to this day I still have a lilac bush in my garden that was split from a bush in my grandmother’s yard.

 

For Rickey the smell is coffee brewing.  When he was a child if he awoke to coffee brewing he knew his father was in the kitchen making coffee and he would look forward to the opportunity to sit with his father early before anyone else was awake – that tradition continues with him when we travel to visit his brothers and sisters – coffee brewing in the early morning hours and gentle conversation still brings the family together.

 

Unfortunately, I never got a picture of me and that bunch of fresh cut lilacs; the stems all wrapped in wet paper towels and covered in tin foil and there is no picture of Rickey as a small boy in Louisiana sitting having coffee with his Dad in the early morning hours – what memories are you making today that you should capture to share with your loved ones, your children, your grandchildren?
