Adventure Day One

May 11, 2008 – In a mother’s mind everyone else should be first; her role is to nurture her children, her grandchildren and her community – but once a year we put her first; before ourselves – to honor her for all she has done for us all year long, all life long.

 

Today all across the world the same question has been asked, “What would you like to do today Mom?”  Unfortunately, we don’t always listen – we make the grand plans and choices for our Moms and say what we think they should do, set the tone and think they will be happy.  The reality is it’s the simple things that Moms want to do; sleep in late, stay in their pajamas all day, sip a cappuccino sitting on their back porch feeding their birds just watching the day float by – no schedule, no cooking, no stress – being one with the universe.

 

I called my mother today, not just because it was mother’s day, but because I call here every Sunday.  My mom turns 80 this September and every call is special.  Some calls I have a list - to tell her all about what is going on in our lives – some calls are short to just say “I love you” and “tell Daddy’O I love him”.  At the end of the call today I said, “Thanks for being such a wonderful mother,” to which she replied, “I just wanted to be a better mother than my mother was to me.” 

 

My daughter called me today, not just because it was mother’s day, but because she calls me almost everyday.  At the end of the call she said, “Thanks for being such a wonderful mother”, to which I replied, “All I ever wanted was to be as good a mother as my mother was to me.”
