Adventure Day One

May 28, 2008 – For the next few blog entries we will be posting actual email messages Rickey and I sent over the first two weeks living in the hospital.  These emails were grounding mechanics for us, a forcing function that caused us to think about others – by sharing the simple everyday stuff, we convinced ourselves that life was normal and that this was all going to work out.  Little did we know - by the end of the second week the news would not be good, and our strength and our faith would be tested once again.

 

Rickey writes:  October 16, 2002 8:55 AM

 

Had a very good day yesterday - our daughter Ellie, her boy friend, and her best friend/our “adopted” daughter Tina, came by for a very long visit, including watching a movie.  PJ brought in a TV and VCR, a table, pictures from home, special mementoes, blankets, pillows and I think the kitchen sink.  And she’s not finished!  Actually I am quite surprised the therapy is so uneventful.  They give me two types of medicine, by IV, one lasts all day, one’s a 15 minute injection. No pain, no fevers, no infection at all (Although I’m sure they’re in the future).  The room does have a phone, which I’ll pass the number on my next e-mail because I forgot to bring it.  The community room down the hall has the internet and I walk down there to send and receive mail.  Thanks to all those that sent me e-mail yesterday, it’s good to hear from you.  Tonight’s activity is a coat hanger war (childhood game memory). 

 

Well my IV machine, whose name is Misty (named after one of our cocker’s) is barking at me again because her battery is low and she wants to go eat.  She eats all the time (the dog and the IV).  I go to get a “permanent” IV hook up today because my veins don’t play well with needles.  That’s about the only new thing I know of for the day.  Love you all, thanks for the support.

My parents arrived today so I will be able to sleep over at the hospital and ensure Rickey gets morning TLC as well as afternoon TLC.  He is in good shape and taking the medicine well.

 

This coming Saturday we are having a Head Shaving Party; no time has been set yet. But Rickey wants to take control of his own hair and he wants me to shave it…well, maybe the medicine is affecting his judgment (SMILE).  Everyone is invited if it works for you, we will take pictures.

 

Remember no fresh flowers or fruit or vegetable, but FAKE ones work just fine, or pictures of flowers are good too, also reading material and videos are good.
